"How the eye loves a genuine thing; how it delights in the nude beauty of the wood." - John Burroughs, Naturalist

Welcome to our website, where the natural beauty of wood is celebrated in an array of forms and influences. Grain of Thought is: A time honored tradition using materials which can't be improved upon to create enduring pieces.

The simple philosophy this company was founded upon: to select the finest material available and honor the gift of wood by giving it a second life as a piece of furniture which may be in your family for generations.

We design furniture hoping to invoke calmness as the piece invites you forth to enjoy the visual harmony of mated woods and honest craftsmanship.

Our designs flow from the influences and integrity of the Shakers, traditional arts and crafts, and Japanese styles. Sometimes we approach a piece in its vernacular or use a synthesis of several influences to achieve a unique balance of form and function.

We also welcome departure from those influences to create a piece that has meaning to you. We understand that your space and what you put into it help to define your individuality which is why we welcome and encourage your interaction in the design process. Whether working directly with you, or with designers and architects, the outcome will be something of true value that will utterly delight you.

Seasoned craftsmen attend to the pieces' every detail, from wood selection to finish, taking the satisfaction of a job well done on to the next piece. We also work with other professionals to ensure the finest in accessories, glass, art glass, metal, hand-forged iron, hardware upholstery, and lighting. Enjoy your visit to our website or come see our studio and gallery located in New York City.

"Have nothing in your home that you do not know to be useful or believe to be beautiful." - William Morris
